昨天去了Bowen  Island，感觉不错，把Island的东面都玩了，因为时间关系，还来不及到西边的beach去，唉，可惜啊。。。我们花了一整天走了2条trail（Killarney Lake和Dorman Point），差不多8公里的路，沿路景色还不错，鸟语花香。ok。。。接下来的plan是如果时间允许，每星期去一个地点，彻底explore B.C.，就按照supervisor给我的玩乐建议（她第一天认识我就问我有没有去explore Vancouver。。。）。

今天朋友发我一张4年前的照片，吓了一跳。。。竟然。。。唉，时间真的可以改变一个人，4年前的今天疯狂得很，现在老了，做很多事已力不从心，累得很，但我相信自己很快就能找到突破点，蜕变到人生的下一阶段。但庆幸的是相片中的大家 （图中为Alex，Nick，我，sisi，bibi）都平安无事，都在为自己的前途奔波劳碌。感谢Nick一直保存着这张照片并在适当的时候发给我。

终于决定装一个中文输入法， 是Google Pinyin。。。因为发现最近自己的中文书写水平暴降。。。前天在facebook上做了一个广东话文字测试，得了个0分（看到朋友中最高的是119分，哇。。。），有点担心，好像已经是广东话文盲了，会讲不会写。。。然后又一直被爸爸跟朋友complain不用中文（妈妈以前是英文老师，虽有不习惯，但还能接受），所以一气之下在家中的另一台机上装了个输入法。因为机器不常带在身边，中文聊天供应时间为每天9:30pm后。请提醒我用中文啊！

update开始： 经过两周的休息，要开始foucs on thesis writing了。发现剩下时间不多，May 15th要去做part time，June 1st要正式上班，所以要把一些该完成的事情完成，该结束的事情结束，该玩的东西玩了。争取在June前稳定下来。然后昨天又莫名其妙的收到一个interview的机会，地点是加州的Brea。刷了一下该公司的网页，有点破，然后就不想去了。。。但做的东西还好，都是自己想做会做的。最近看了个报道，说美国现在少发了很多H-1B，不但数量少，而且还要抽签。然后就更加不想去了（其实美国也不是想象中这么好，主要是太拽了，lab里还有不少人是从美国过来的呢。。。）。

最近又跟人打了一下Street Fighter 4，K得很爽，暂时还找不到对手，sigh。。。无敌是最寂寞的。。。征三颗星以上的对手。。。

超想自己养一只，但考虑到现在生活不稳定，可能会养一只死两只，还是等settle down了在说吧。。。

现在怎么写一遍中文的blog都这么困难。。。竟花了一个多小时。。。还是英文用的舒服啊。。。

You are reluctant to do anything constructive when you are not sure whether what you are doing is what you are looking for. Most of the time you become such a loser and don't see any hope. You are freaking out of your mind and lack the courage of continuing with it. You are pretty lost and lose your dignity, ambition and creativity. Then it comes the feelings of depression...However, you might suddenly find out, you still like the old you and its not too bad to give it a try, even there won't be a good ending. Then the depression is gone! And you find yourself listening to this song and feel gratitude with what you have got so far and that you have gone this far...

Finally I have sold myself to a company...with low price...a week ago I was still wondering whether I should take the offer for the fear that I made the "wrong" decision again. Believe or not, people who care about me and I care about are constantly being hurt by my decisions. I have seen enough tears and disappointed faces... Thats why I am so afraid of making any big decision nowadays...

I was suggested to weight the advantages and the disadvantages. Although I know what I would choose in the end when getting to know the offer, I still did the assignment. Results are as followed with the ratings behind (1-5):

Advantages:

1. Continuing my career without any pause. Since the company requires me to work part-time from May 15th and then full-time from June 1st, there won't be any gap between my graduation date and the first date at work. (4)
2. The company has a good team. I like the team a lot and the technologies they use. From what I saw in the company, the team members are happy to help their teammates and the working environment is quite enjoyable. Having been through a pretty bad cooperation in my thesis project, a good team, at this point, really means to me. (5)
3. The timing of the offer. Considering the economy breakdown with millions of people losing their jobs (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/03/03/us/20090303_LEONHARDT.html), being able to get a job offer today is more than a blessing. (5)
4. The company locates in downtown Vancouver. Although I have been to few places in Canada, Vancouver is definitely way much better than Ottawa in my opinion (you won't believe how cold Ottawa is). Besides, I really like the summer of Vancouver and its one of the best seasons I have ever seen in life. (4)

Disadvantages:

1. No break between my graduation date and my first date at work. I still haven't been to Hawaii!! (4)
2. Low salary. The salary I get is way less than what a master student should. Probably this is because of the economy breakdown?? (5)
3. A three-month probation period. I don't really like the three-month probation period in the company, they will evaluate me for three months before officially hiring me and that gives me lots of pressures. (3)
4. A change of environment and life style. People keep telling me when you are at work, you will be drown in the material world and can't easily get back, e.g. alcohol in a pub and socialize with colleagues every week until you finally build up a family and stuff like that. Well... (4)
5. The chance of meeting with friends. Since everybody works in different environments, the chance of often meeting with each other in the future is slim. The party is over... (5)
6. I have to eat lunch and dinner alone!!! (5)
7. an untellable reason. So depressed with it... (5)

So the average point of the advantages (AVT) is 4.5 with the standard deviation of 0.58, while the average point of the disadvantages (DAVT) is 4.43 with the standard deviation of 0.79. Assuming 5 is the best choice, AVT is slightly better than DAVT by 1.4% ((4.5-4.43)/5*100%).

Well...then I sold myself to the company...end of analysis!

The first single is Hollywood Whore (for this video, cool stuff starts at 2:45', bloody! If you are not sure who they are talking about, check it out here). The second single is Lifeline. The album sounds pretty evil on the whole but I just like it :) . Click here to listen more. They still kick ass though the band replaced the drummer.

Suddenly find that I am pretty lost these days. Sometimes I don't even realize what I am doing and why. I don't even know what I am capable of anymore...Being injected with so many ideas, I feel that I keep setting up obstacles myself and am gradually walking away from any plans. From my pass experiences, its really really dangerous when you can't be yourself and do what you want.

I really need to sit down and think for days about this issue: What should I do next? What should be put on the map and what should not? Who am I? Whats the new plan if the old one is deprecated?

I have been fascinated by some cartoon theme songs lately (I am also watching them ). It feels good to take a break from metal music and enjoy something light from Japan sometimes .

Web-based IDEs to become mainstream? It seems to be the case when Mozilla Bespin and Eclipse headless come into action.

Actually its not something new and I have been talking about it for some time already. I still remember when I proposed this a year ago, my mates in the bullpen kept questioning me: "What a crazy idea!", "It looks cool, but there are lots of technical issues out there...". Even I mentioned it again to my supervisor yesterday (I have been bugging her for comments to my crap for a long time  ), she was still in doubt: "I still can't really imagine developing this way...".

Thats true! It might be still a bit clumsy to build a huge program through the browser (the Bespin+Eclipse headless solution) and the user experience is awaiting to be improved, but nobody can't resist the fact that, as the progress of Web 2.0, everything will be put on the web. Just give you some exciting evolutions: Microsoft Word -> Google Doc, MSN Live -> GTalk, BTing movies -> Video streaming, etc. And the trend has started to grow several years ago.

Anyway, great job Mozilla! Looks like the next generation of Eclipse is coming soon (within the next 5 years?). My work is also mentioned as one of the examples here (scroll down to "Aurora SDK").

BTW, I have been listening a lot to Theory of A Dead Man lately (they are from Vancouver as well...). I discovered them through listening to the radio in the car when I was in Ottawa. Here is one of their popular songs. Enjoy~ And Lost is also really really good this season...highly recommended!

As I said before, I was planning to go to Montreal. But still couldn't make it in the end, since Thomas got the stomach flu and nobody drove me there...well, plan changed again! Astonishingly, I was not surprised, probably because most of my experiences in Ottawa were not according to plans, e.g. the original plan of the user study did not work at all and we almost have to redo everything from scratch.

So...I spent the day exploring Ottawa instead. The trip started with the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Quebec, a French-speaking area. An interesting experience there was people tentatively speak French, and assume you can speak French: a couple asked me whether I could take a photo for them in front of the museum. Instead of using English, they asked it in French. My first intuition was "are there many Asian speaking French in Quebec?". After a second thought, its probably because they are so pound of French that they don't even bother to speak English in daily life.

I am fortunate enough to stay in Ottawa for its Winterlude festival, which is one of the most important events here. I went to see the ice sculpture and ate beaver tail (believe or not, it just tastes awesome!). Check out what we experienced:

Winterlude Ottawa 2009

Since I have almost finished the work here, although not as perfectly as I expected (but I tried my best...), I am planning to take a day off to Montreal and have a little fun there . I will be back to Vancouver this Thursday and am in time for the Valentine's day this weekend. So see you guys then~

I happened to have half a day off last weekend and visited the Parliament in Ottawa. Unfortunately I didn't have the time of giving you more detailed descriptions. But the experience was definitely awesome!

About the user study, since we couldn't gather good data, we tentatively delay the comeback date. Lets pray that won't happen!

Ottawa

Jan. 20th, Thomas and I walked out of the International airport of Ottawa. "Are you ready for Ottawa?", he asked. "I really ain't!" I casually answered then I immediately realized I had a good intuition of things as I always do. Because at the next moment, I just exposed to the -20 Celsius coldness and freaked out.

"Thats a typical Canadian weather. You might try to get used to it!", an IBM folk told me. Thats true! Isn't it what we expect before coming to Canada? Maybe Ottawa is just too Canadian, no matter from weather to culture. Even the bus strike that is happening now (yeah, there is no bus, we have to rent a car!).

Since I will disappear for a while (tentatively show up in the week of Feb. 6th, lets pray!), I endow some of you the rights to check out my YouTube videos when you think of me...you know how to find them since you already did... ;)

Concerning how to celebrate the Chinese new year, I just hang out with a couple of guys from RIM (Research In Motion) and drank beers in a pub while watching hockey all-star weekends. Of course there were lots of guy's talks among us but those were really fun! Thanks to all the RIM guys!

I would like to introduce my new family member "米米乐"! She is a 3 months old Turkish Angora with white and brown. She likes eating chicken meat and climbing trees. She lives with my parents in China. I can't wait to meet her but probably will not make it until May .

　　　　可是韩美美长了一副那种妇女干部的样子，我也不太喜欢。Lucy和Lily里面我比较喜欢Lily。总觉得lily比较单纯，不像lucy那么有心机。（事实证明是我比较有心机```初中英语课本能联想这么多```）
　　　　
　　想起来还是很令人回味的。还记得有篇课文是问个老太太的年龄，她最后的那句话语音像妖精。

　　　　 比较诡异的还有那个什么Uncle Wang，创造了一个什么可以飞的自行车，还有一个合成词叫什么来着？觉得他真是科学怪人。。。最最诡异的是有一个电话号码，6098724，是一个对话里面的，我一直记着，而且脱口就出。。。结果不幸在天涯看到竟然有人和我一样对这个号码念念不忘。。。

　　　　　　 LiLei，被翻译成李雷，中国男孩，平头短发，喜穿浅色T恤，一看就是那种正统的中国式好学生。不过他并不是那种死板的书呆子，他很喜欢玩，记得有一课里，他拿着球去玩，反而是Jim没做完功课，被关在家里。这种动静结合的性格，使得他在哪儿都吃香，既能和LinTao这样好学的人成为莫逆，也能和Jim这样好动的人成为死party。
　　　　
　　　　 Jim Green，全名是James Allen Green,被翻译成吉姆．格林（詹姆斯．艾伦．格林），在中国生活的英国孩子，一头棕色的卷发，喜欢穿深色的T恤，给人的印象是有活力、聪明，但是有些马虎，时常犯些小错误。

说一下第一册第一张彩页吧，我总觉得这有一种英雄排座次的作用。上面有四幅图，三幅是三个家族：Green家族（英国人）、King家族（美国人）、Read家族（加拿大人），每幅都是父母和两个孩子一共四人。第一幅图则是五人：Li Lei、Han Meimei和LinTao，外加老师Miss Gao（Gao Hui）和Uncle Wang。在这张彩页上，第一集团的七人全部在。
　　　　
　　　　 Green家族在书中风光无限，露脸机会最多，而且鸡犬升天，连鹦鹉Polly和小猫Mimi（这可是中国猫）都能频频上镜。
　　　　
　　　　 相比之下，Read家族就比较惨了，只有一个Ann撑场面，Tom身为彩页上九个孩子之一，在书中几乎消失，真是够郁闷的。

　　　　　　 如果说谁是第一男主角还存在争议的话，第一女主角就当仁不让的是Han Meimei。这个齐耳短发的中国女孩，文雅温和，智慧善良，几乎是所有女性美德的化身。在书中，她更像是一个姐姐的身份，帮助同学们排忧解难。
　　　　
　　　　 很多人都觉得，Li Lei和Han Meimei天生一对。然而我经过统计发现，其实HanMeimei和Jim一起出现的时候更多，尤其是后期。想想也是，排除国际友谊因素，Han Meimei和LiLei的性格是相似的，而跟Jim却是互补的，更适合在一起。

　　　　　　 Kate Green，Jim的妹妹。和哥哥一样，Kate也是昵称，全称是Catherine（凯瑟琳）。同样是一头棕色卷发（不知怎么，Jim和Kate总让我想起哈里．波特中的罗恩和金妮，Han Meimei则让我想起赫敏）。
　　　　　　 Kate很活泼可爱，后来戏份也越来越多。我奇怪为啥她不和同年龄的小朋友们玩，要和大几岁的哥哥的朋友们玩。

　　　　　　 可爱的双胞胎姐妹，来自美国。两个人长得一模一样（美工偷懒，哈）。开始的时候，两人都是同时出现，不过到后来，编者有意扩大她们之间的区别，也经常会单独出镜。
　　　　　　
　　　　　　 Ann
　　　　　　 Ann是加拿大人，一头金色长发，标准的西方血统。她和Jim、Lilei他们不在一个班，但是和Han Meimei是好朋友，另外她还有一个中国好朋友Chen Hua（女孩）。
　　　　　　 Ann在书中最重头的一次出场是她的生日，重要人物几乎全部出场参加。从此我知道了Fried Chicken，Fish and Chips这两种食物。不过当时没有概念，直到我们家乡出现了肯德鸡……
　　　　　　
　　　　　　 Lin Tao
　　　　　　 作为在彩页上出现的人物，LinTao还是很重要的，不过不知为什么他在很长一段时间内都不出现，硬是被挤到了第二集团。作为书中唯一的眼镜男孩（大人不算），LinTao长着一副睿智的知识分子模样。不过，不要以为他很文弱，初三课本中，他可是参加了运动会接力跑的冠军成员。

　　　　　　 这两个是Jim的死party，沾了不少光。他们三个在一起，1班的体育水平就能提高一个台阶啊。没说的，都是调皮鬼。

　　　　　　 Han Meimei的好朋友。我发现L、H、J、A四巨头都有各自的好朋友。Wei Hua又是一个热情贤淑型中国女孩，不过感觉不如Han Meimei成熟。

　　　　　　 跟其他中国孩子相比，Ling Feng显得比较成熟而独立。后期他出现的次数很多，但我最记得的还是他第一次出现时候被Jim的飞盘砸中了脑袋……

　　　　　　 澳大利亚男孩，因为在中国看到下雪的圣诞节而欣喜不已。之后他还有多次露面，最有趣的就是和一大群人去猴岛旅游了。

　　　　　　 很晚才出来，又是一个西方式长发美人。我似乎记得她姓Smith。

　　　　　　 除了以上15人之外，还有一些让人记住的同学。比如MaLili，初一初二她都出现了，而且都是喊“起立”的那一个。看来，她就是1班里学号1号的学生了。还有Sun Huimin、Li Ming、LiuMing、Fang Xiaoling、Bob White……等等。
